Medicine (MBBS & Beyond)

A long, demanding, and deeply respected path - directly treating patients and specializing over years of postgraduate training.

Medicine, starting with an MBBS degree, is one of the longest and most demanding academic and professional paths - but it leads to one of the most consistently respected and needed professions, with genuine, stable demand that isn't going away regardless of broader hiring trends in other industries.

Why it's a strong path: healthcare demand is structurally different from most other fields - it doesn't fluctuate with tech hiring cycles or economic conditions the way other sectors do, and India continues to have a real shortage of doctors relative to population, especially in specific specializations and in semi-urban and rural areas.

What the work actually looks like: MBBS itself is 5.5 years (including a mandatory year of internship), and most doctors go on to further postgraduate specialization (MD/MS, 3 more years) to practice in a specific field - general practice straight after MBBS is possible but most doctors specialize. The path is genuinely demanding throughout, academically and personally, well beyond graduation.

How to get started: entry is through NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test), a single national entrance exam for MBBS admission across India, taken after Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. It's a highly competitive exam relative to the number of MBBS seats available, so most successful candidates prepare seriously for 1-2 years, often alongside or right after Class 12.

A realistic note: this is a path that requires genuine, sustained commitment across many years - from NEET preparation through MBBS through postgraduate specialization - so it's worth being honest with yourself about that timeline and the emotional demands of clinical work before committing.
