AI Won't Take Your Job - But Someone Using AI Might

14 Aug 2026

A lot of career anxiety right now comes from one question: is AI going to take my job? The honest, practical answer is more useful than a simple yes or no: AI is changing what almost every job looks like, and the people most at risk aren't the ones in "AI-exposed" roles - they're the ones who don't adapt to working alongside it.

A more useful way to think about it:

For most roles, AI isn't replacing the job wholesale - it's automating specific tasks inside the job (drafting a first version, summarizing information, generating routine content) while leaving the judgment, context, and decision-making to a person. That means the shape of many jobs is changing even where the job itself isn't disappearing.

What this means practically:

1. Get hands-on with AI tools relevant to your field early - not to become an "AI expert," but so you're not starting from zero when your workplace expects it.
2. Focus on the parts of your work that are hardest to automate: judgment calls, relationship-building, understanding context, and creative problem-solving. These become more valuable, not less, as routine tasks get automated.
3. Don't panic-switch fields because a headline mentions "AI risk" for your industry. Look at what specific tasks in your target role are actually being automated versus what's expected to stay human-led.
4. If you're choosing a career path now, this is a reasonable factor to weigh - but it shouldn't be the only one. Interest and aptitude still matter more for long-term satisfaction than trying to predict exactly which jobs are "AI-proof."

Curious how a specific career path is likely to be affected? That's exactly the kind of question worth bringing to a counsellor conversation - it's more useful as a real discussion than a generic prediction.
